Why Writing is Hard

This so much! I always feel tired even after a short burst of writing.

A Writer's Path

by Meg Dowell

Writing is hard.

You know this without having to convince yourself it’s true. You may love it – it may be your art; your love; your baby – but that doesn’t mean there are days it doesn’t take all you have left in you to drag yourself to your laptop and write something. Writing isn’t easy. Sometimes it feels like the words are flowing from your fingers and they’ll never stop – but not long afterward, you’re staring at your empty coffee cup, in a daze, as if you can’t believe you just wrote 2,000 words without thinking twice about it.

I’m Trying Something New!

So this week has been a lot waiting. Waiting for my edits to be ready, waiting for my cover art, even waiting for the words to come to me for book two (because it’s NaNo and if I can’t hit my word count MY LIFE IS OVER AhAHHAHAhaha…anyway). So, what helps ease all of the anxiety of waiting?

Here is a playlist of the songs I’ve listened to the most this last week.

  1. Starving – Hailee Steinfeld

I really love this song right now. It speaks to that romantic in me and helps me to remember what’s going on in my characters’ brains sometimes.

2. Bombastic – Bonnie McKee

This is the song that helps get my brain awake in the morning! It’s so fun and upbeat, I love to blast it in my car when I’m on my way to do today’s work with my sister.

3. Can’t Stop Dancing – Becky G

I dance to this song. I probably have no business dancing, so I do it when I’m sure no one is around. The cats look at me like I’m crazy.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. Cold Water – Justin Beiber

This video leaves me with so many questions. Why do they dance the same dance the whole video? Why is every scene in a place that nobody would dance in? Why?? Anyway, really like the song, too.

5. Monody – The Fat Rat

Out of all the videos in this list, this is my absolute favorite! Best for last, right? The first thing that drew me to this was the image. I love this picture. It really speaks to me about adventure and what a big world is out there. So does the song. If there was a song I would put to an adventure montage, this would be it. I can listen to this for hours, over and over, and it always rejuvenates that little part of me that longs to write about my characters adventures.

So that’s my list! What kind of music do you guys enjoy?

Writing – As Explained By The Princess Bride

Love this! One of my favorite movies.

The Overactive Imagination

Today I’m exploring the relationship of two of my favorite things; writing and The Princess Bride. You might think these things have nothing in common, but after some thought, I’ve come up with a list that adequately explains writing.

Being a writer and putting words on paper. Sounds easy right? Thing is, it’s full of it’s own little quirks and adventures along the way. Most of the time, you’re really just tiptoeing the edge of the Cliffs of Insanity.

For instance, when your characters know exactly how to screw with you by throwing unexpected plot twists the size of a boulder at your head…

And as the author, we believe them.

While suffering from a bout of writer’s block, you manage to pen a few sentences and rather proudly glance back over them. Then your characters pop in with something like this.

When plotting is not going quite as…

Writing – As Explained by Firefly

Ah, so much yes!

The Overactive Imagination

Sorry for the radio silence recently. Short explanation is I’ve been super busy/lazy. 🙂 But I got the idea for this post at lunch the other day, so I figured I’d continue with the series that started with my Princess Bride posts. Using Firefly/90% of all the best Wash quotes. 🙂

Haven’t seen the Princess Bride posts yet? Check out Part 1, and Part 2.

When your characters decide they want to do something else-

When you get too excited handing out character deaths-

When procrastination hits you hard-

Sometimes going back and reading your writing is like-

Sometimes worldbuilding is hard…

When the plot bunnies spiral out of control-

We all want that giant royalty check, but…

Trying to explain your brilliant story idea to someone. But words…

Reminiscing about that plot twist that readers hate you for-

So there you have it. 🙂 Did…
